In 2023 I served as artist-in-residence at Isle Royale National Park, a remote island in the north of Lake Superior. I had an amazing three weeks in solitude at the Dassler Cabin, paddling around in my canoe, observing rocks formation and enjoyign the incredible setting.
The rocks of Isle Royale are over a billion years old and were formed as part of the Great Continental Rift, a period where North American tried to tear itself apart and huge amounts of lava flooded areas from Ontario to Kansas. It was possible the largest lava flow on earth.
I chose to hint at this fiery past in these rock portraits, bridging millennia.
